A high bounce rate is <em>always <\/em>assumed to be a bad thing (even when it\u2019s not &#8211; especially on landing pages).<\/p>\n<p>Low bounce rates, on the other hand, are equated with engagement even when other metrics (such as time spent on site or actual clicks) don\u2019t back it up.<\/p>\n<p>That said, there are a lot of reasons why you might want to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/google-analytics-metrics-impact-conversion-rate-optimization\/\">cut down your bounce rate<\/a>. From increasing search rankings to improving user experience, lower bounce rate is definitely a marketing metric to strive for.<\/p>\n<p>In this post, I\u2019m going to share 7 little known tips on how you can reduce your bounce rate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Find your best performing content and reuse its format and style<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not all pages on your site will have the same bounce rate.<\/p>\n<p>Some pages will simply perform better (in terms of bounce rate) because of their formatting, tone or style.<\/p>\n<p>Finding these pages and reusing their formatting on poorly performing pages can improve their bounce rate. If nothing else, this exercise will show you what kind of content your readers actually like.<\/p>\n<p>To find this content, open your Google Analytics account. Next, go to <em>Behavior -&gt; Site Content -&gt; All Pages<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog_img\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7167\" src=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/images\/blog-images\/google-analytics-5.jpg\" alt=\"google-analytics\" width=\"217\" height=\"366\" \/><\/div>\n<p class=\"normal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 10.0pt;\">This will show you a list of all the pages on your site along with their page views, average time on site, exit rate and bounce rate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"normal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 10.0pt;\">Sort the results by \u201cBounce Rate\u201d. Make sure that you sort them in ascending order (i.e. 0% bounce rate to 100% bounce rate):<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog_img\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7164\" src=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/images\/blog-images\/bounce-rate.jpg\" alt=\"bounce-rate\" width=\"630\" height=\"303\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Look for pages that have a good mix of low bounce rate and high average time on page. You might have to dig past a few irrelevant sharing or category pages to find them.<\/p>\n<p>Once you find such pages, open them in separate tabs and make a note of what makes them work.<\/p>\n<p>Ask yourself:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is this page using engaging images?<\/li>\n<li>Does this page have a headline that hooks in readers?<\/li>\n<li>Is the content format and writing style highly engaging?<\/li>\n<li>Does the page use a different layout than other pages?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Apply the lessons learned from this exercise to other pages.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Update old content with fresh information or a disclaimer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Google has always <a href=\"https:\/\/search.googleblog.com\/2011\/11\/giving-you-fresher-more-recent-search.html\">emphasized freshness<\/a> in its search results. In fact, there\u2019s an entire component of Google\u2019s algorithm &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/blog\/whiteboard-friday-query-deserves-freshness\">Query Deserves Freshness<\/a> &#8211; that emphasizes fresh results.<\/p>\n<p>Google focuses on fresh results because it knows its users want up to date information. An article on \u201cSEO tips\u201d from 2011, for instance, will likely have a lot of outdated tips.<\/p>\n<p>This is one reason why Google shows the date the page was last updated in SERPs (when available):<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog_img\">\n<div class=\"blog_img\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7182\" src=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/images\/blog-images\/update-content.jpg\" alt=\"update-content\" width=\"630\" height=\"473\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>A user landing on a page with outdated information will likely not stick around for long. Hence, poor bounce rate.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s an easy way to work around this: find your older content and refresh it with fresh information.<\/p>\n<p>For example, Brian Dean originally wrote <a href=\"http:\/\/backlinko.com\/seo-techniques\">this post<\/a> on actionable SEO techniques back in January 2014.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog_img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7183\" src=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/images\/blog-images\/wayback.jpg\" alt=\"wayback\" width=\"630\" height=\"329\" \/><\/div>\n<p class=\"normal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 10.0pt;\">In June this year, he updated this post with fresher, more relevant content. He also changed the post title to reflect this update.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog_img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7162\" src=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/images\/blog-images\/backlinko.jpg\" alt=\"backlinko\" width=\"453\" height=\"325\" \/><\/div>\n<p class=\"normal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 10.0pt;\">Google\u2019s spiders found this update and changed the SERPs to show the new updated date:<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog_img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7170\" src=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/images\/blog-images\/google-serp.jpg\" alt=\"google-serp\" width=\"630\" height=\"378\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Your updates don\u2019t even have to be elaborate. Simply refreshing key content with newer information can be enough to not just curb your bounce rate, but also give you a ranking boost.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Ensure you\u2019re not getting traffic for non-targeted keywords<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not every keyword you rank for will actually be related to your content.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you Google the keyword \u201chigh traffic\u201d, you\u2019ll mostly see results related to marketing.<\/p>\n<p>However, a few results are about managing roads with lots of traffic.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog_img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7174\" src=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/images\/blog-images\/non-targeted-keywords.jpg\" alt=\"non-targeted-keywords\" width=\"584\" height=\"450\" \/><\/div>\n<p>If you were running a site about managing road traffic, there\u2019s a good chance you\u2019ll get some stray traffic from this keyword.<\/p>\n<p>The trouble is, most people searching for this keyword are likely looking for ways to increase traffic to their sites, not understand road traffic management.<\/p>\n<p>These visitors will leave your page very quickly, negatively affecting you bounce rate.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s an easy way to find these pages.<\/p>\n<p>First, log into Google Analytics and go <em>Behavior -&gt; Site Content -&gt; All Pages<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Here, find pages with very high bounce rates and significantly lower average time on site (compared to the rest of the site).<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog_img\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7164\" src=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/images\/blog-images\/bounce-rate.jpg\" alt=\"bounce-rate\" width=\"630\" height=\"303\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Next, log into Google Search Console for your site. Here, go to <em>Search Traffic -&gt; Search Analytics<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog_img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7169\" src=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/images\/blog-images\/google-search-analytics.jpg\" alt=\"google-search-analytics\" width=\"225\" height=\"472\" \/><\/div>\n<p class=\"normal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 10.0pt;\">Select \u201cPages\u201d and \u201cPosition\u201d at the top of the page.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog_img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7179\" src=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/images\/blog-images\/search-page.jpg\" alt=\"search-page\" width=\"628\" height=\"152\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"blog_img\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"normal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 10.0pt;\">Find the page in question with the poor bounce rate. Click this page.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog_img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7180\" src=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/images\/blog-images\/search-position.jpg\" alt=\"search-position\" width=\"630\" height=\"125\" \/><\/div>\n<p class=\"normal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 10.0pt;\">On the next screen, select \u201cQueries\u201d again.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog_img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7181\" src=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/images\/blog-images\/search-queries.jpg\" alt=\"search-queries\" width=\"583\" height=\"314\" \/><\/div>\n<p>This will show you which queries this page ranks for. If you find a vague query &#8211; such as \u201chigh traffic\u201d &#8211; you can rest assured that your poor bounce rate is caused by the quality of your traffic, not anything on your page.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Match user expectation with dominant traffic source<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What people expect to find on your site depends on where they\u2019re coming from.<\/p>\n<p>A visitor who clicks on your site link in your Twitter bio, for instance, has very different expectations from someone who searches for a query and finds your site in the SERPs.<\/p>\n<p>Matching your content of a page to the expectations of people coming from its biggest traffic source can do a lot to reduce bounce rate.<\/p>\n<p>For example, ASOS, the UK-based fashion retailer, shows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/5-reliable-guidelines-for-designing-higher-converting-landing-pages\/\">different landing pages to traffic coming from different social channels<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Instagram, it leads visitors to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/services\/landing-page-optimization\/\">dedicated landing page<\/a> called \u201cAs Seen on Instagram\u201d:<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog_img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7173\" src=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/images\/blog-images\/instagram.jpg\" alt=\"instagram\" width=\"628\" height=\"323\" \/><\/div>\n<p class=\"normal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 10.0pt;\">On Facebook, it directs traffic to an \u201cASOS Likes\u201d blog with Facebook-focused content:<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog_img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7161\" src=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/images\/blog-images\/ASOS.jpg\" alt=\"ASOS\" width=\"508\" height=\"444\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Doing something like this can help you craft an experience tailored for the biggest traffic source for each page.<\/p>\n<p>To do this, log into Google Analytics again and go to <em>Behavior -&gt; Site Content -&gt; All Pages<\/em>. Now click on \u201cSecondary Dimension\u201d on the \u201cPlot Rows\u201d bar and select <em>Acquisition -&gt; Source\/Medium<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog_img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7168\" src=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/images\/blog-images\/google-referral-traffic.jpg\" alt=\"google-referral-traffic\" width=\"628\" height=\"351\" \/><\/div>\n<p>This will show you a list of your pages along with their biggest traffic sources:<\/p>\n<p>In the above example, I can see that the biggest source of traffic to one of my pages is Facebook. For another page, it\u2019s Reddit.<\/p>\n<p>Knowing this, I can create an experience tailored for Facebook or Reddit users.<\/p>\n<p>There are multiple ways you can do this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Adding copy at the top of the page acknowledging the visitor\u2019s traffic source.<\/li>\n<li>Prioritize sharing buttons depending on biggest traffic source. For instance, if you know that a bulk of the traffic to a page is coming from Reddit, you can place Reddit sharing buttons before other social networks.<\/li>\n<li>Offer additional content (such as downloadables) based on the largest traffic source to the page.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Doing this will ensure that you offer the most optimum experience to the largest share of users to a page and thus, improve bounce rate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Increase pageviews and time on site with content recommendations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A visitor landed on your site, scrolled through the page, and read the entire content.<\/p>\n<p>What next?<\/p>\n<p>By making <a href=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/the-importance-of-personalized-ecommerce-4-examples-of-how-its-done\/\">better use of content recommendations<\/a>, \u201cread more\u201d and \u201cnext article\u201d links, you can increase your pageviews and reduce your bounce rate.<\/p>\n<p>There are several ways to do this:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Show content recommendations at the bottom of each blog post<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once readers have read a blog post, they are much more likely to consume more content. After all, if they liked something well enough to read it, they might very well read more.<\/p>\n<p>For example, at the bottom of each post on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/\">AtlasObscura<\/a>, you\u2019ll find a list of posts titled \u201cRecent Stories\u201d:<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog_img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7172\" src=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/images\/blog-images\/increase-pageviews.jpg\" alt=\"increase-pageviews\" width=\"628\" height=\"279\" \/><\/div>\n<p class=\"normal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 10.0pt;\">These recommendations don\u2019t have to be necessarily visual. On Tim Ferriss\u2019 blog, he adds a list of recommended posts at the bottom of his content:<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog_img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7178\" src=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/images\/blog-images\/recommended-posts.jpg\" alt=\"recommended-posts\" width=\"479\" height=\"268\" \/><\/div>\n<p>On WordPress, you can easily create such recommendation lists with plugins like <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/yet-another-related-posts-plugin\/\">YARP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Add a \u201cRandom Article\u201d button<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you run a site with a lot of content, your recommendations can be a bit more random.<\/p>\n<p>On Distractify, for example, you\u2019ll see a \u201cDistract Me\u201d button in the navigation bar:<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog_img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7165\" src=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/images\/blog-images\/distractify.jpg\" alt=\"distractify\" width=\"630\" height=\"130\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Since Distractify also uses a \u201csticky\u201d navigation bar (i.e. the navigation scrolls with the page), readers know they can click this button anytime to find more content.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Push visitors to read more by showing them your most popular content<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One way to get readers to stick around longer on your site is to show them your most popular content. Since this content is labeled as \u201cpopular\u201d, it is likely to get more clicks than a random post (this is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/four-ways-to-boost-ecommerce-conversion-rates\/\">social proof in action<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>For example, on Tim Ferriss\u2019 blog mentioned above, you\u2019ll see a list of \u201cMost Popular\u201d posts and \u201cPopular Podcasts\u201d in the sidebar:<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog_img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7178\" src=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/images\/blog-images\/recommended-posts.jpg\" alt=\"recommended-posts\" width=\"479\" height=\"268\" \/><\/div>\n<p class=\"normal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 10.0pt;\">This is a great way to get readers to read more without negatively affecting their user-experience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"normal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 10.0pt;\">There are other ways you can get people to read more content on your site. NYTimes, for example, has a host of recommendations on its content:<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog_img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7175\" src=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/images\/blog-images\/nytimes.jpg\" alt=\"nytimes\" width=\"630\" height=\"310\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Together, these can push up your pageviews substantially and help cut down bounce rate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Experiment with different layouts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Single column or two-columns? Left sidebar or right sidebar? Sticky or static navigation?<\/p>\n<p>Different layouts will impact your bounce rate differently. A sticky navigation menu might get you more pageviews and clicks, but it might hurt average time per page. A two-column layout might help you get additional clicks\/subscribers through sidebar forms, but impact readability, especially on smaller screens.<\/p>\n<p>As with most things marketing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/ab-testing\/\">split test different layouts<\/a> to see what works best for you.<\/p>\n<p>That said, there are some established (and emerging) layout conventions you should follow:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keep the sidebar to the right<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nngroup.com\/articles\/f-shaped-pattern-reading-web-content\/\">usability studies by NNGroup<\/a>, people don\u2019t read linearly down a page. Instead, they follow a \u201cF-shaped\u201d pattern.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog_img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7176\" src=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/images\/blog-images\/page-layout.jpg\" alt=\"page-layout\" width=\"628\" height=\"293\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Readers also focus on the largest column of content before going back to smaller columns.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this, the left sidebar is often ignored. The right sidebar, however, gets more attention as shown above.<\/p>\n<p>Lesson: if you must use sidebars, stick them to the right of the page.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For higher engagement, experiment with a single column layout<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An emerging layout trend among blogs is to use a large font with a single column layout to promote engagement.<\/p>\n<p>On Medium, for instance, all content is condensed within a 700px wide column.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog_img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7171\" src=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/images\/blog-images\/higher-engagement.jpg\" alt=\"higher-engagement\" width=\"630\" height=\"434\" \/><\/div>\n<p>This helps readers focus on the content and avoid stray clicks and distractions.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, with most readers moving to smaller screens, a single column layout is also easier to read, thus increasing engagement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Consider adding a sticky navigation menu<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Usability experts are seldom advocates of \u201csticky\u201d menus that scroll with the content, but as far as engagement and bounce rate are concerned, you can\u2019t go wrong with them.<\/p>\n<p>Stick navigation menus ensure that readers always have access to all your content. If they\u2019re done with an article (or don\u2019t enjoy reading it), they can click away to another post.<\/p>\n<p>For businesses, the sticky menu is also a great way to promote your products and services.<\/p>\n<p>On WordStream\u2019s blog, for example, the sticky menu gives readers a quick way to learn more about WordStream\u2019s product or company:<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog_img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7160\" src=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/images\/blog-images\/wordstream.jpg\" alt=\"wordstream\" width=\"630\" height=\"250\" \/><\/div>\n<p><strong>7. Make sure that your pop-ups don\u2019t hurt engagement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pop-ups are great for capturing emails, but terrible for engagement and bounce rates.<\/p>\n<p>After all, the last thing your readers want after landing on your site is a pop-up with a hard-to-find \u201cclose\u201d button.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, there are two ways to make sure that your pop-up doesn\u2019t hurt engagement (while still capturing leads):<\/p>\n<p><strong>Use scroll-triggered or time delayed pop-ups<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If a pop-up is the first thing a visitor sees after landing on your site, there\u2019s a good chance he\u2019ll click away.<\/p>\n<p>However, if the pop-up eases into view gradually after he\u2019s scrolled through half the site or spent 15+ seconds on a page, it likely won\u2019t affect the user-experience much.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, since this reader has already had time to read some of your content, he might be more inclined to consider your offer, thus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/\">increasing conversion rates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For example, on <a href=\"http:\/\/bloggingwizard.com\">BloggingWizard<\/a>, the pop-up shows only after a 3-5 second delay.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog_img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7163\" src=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/images\/blog-images\/blogging-wizard.jpg\" alt=\"blogging-wizard\" width=\"536\" height=\"343\" \/><\/div>\n<p>This ensures that the pop-up isn\u2019t the first thing people see on a site.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly any pop-up creation tool will help you create time delayed pop-ups as well.
